Au Moyen Âge, dans une vaste contrée multiethnique, le seigneur Bartok est sommé de se rendre au château de l'empereur pour lui rendre hommage. Mais à son arrivée, il froisse l'influent ministre Gezza Mott en refusant de lui verser un pot de vin. S'ensuit un combat au cours duquel Bartok, bien qu'affaibli par une maladie incurable, passe près de tuer le ministre corrompu. Traduit en justice devant l'empereur, le vénérable seigneur est condamné à mort et, à la suggestion de Mott, exécuté par son propre commandant et héritier présomptif, le vaillant Raiden. De retour chez lui, ce dernier, rongé par la culpabilité, renoue avec les démons de l'alcool et repousse son épouse, qui ne le reconnaît plus. Le lieutenant de Raiden, ainsi que ses hommes, n'ont toutefois pas renoncé à se venger de l'infâme Gezza Mott. Lequel, en proie à la paranoïa, a réquisitionné des milliers de soldats pour le défendre.
